Hello, Nantucketers!
We launched Bluedot Living five years ago on Martha’s Vineyard, in May of 2021. We’re still so proud to be publishing the stories of people meeting the challenges of climate change — the stewards and the gardeners, the plant pollinators and the benthic divers. I find that when I’m feeling, well, blue, about vexations we face with some of our policymakers, I feel less blue and mostly positively hopeful when I look at how much we get done in our own backyards.
By the way, we have several national newsletters: Bluedot Living Kitchen, the Daily Dot, the BuyBetter Marketplace, and the Weekly. You can sign up for any of those newsletters here.
Thank you to the organizations who step right up and not just do the work, but share Field Notes with us to tell us how it all happens: The Town of Nantucket’s Natural Resources Department, the Linda Loring Nature Foundation, the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, Nantucket Lights, and Remain.
Will Kinsella not only writes us beautiful essays of interesting things he actually tries at home (this year, it’s mowing his meadow with a scythe — yes, that’s what the grim reaper carries), but also helps to support junior reporters with funding from the Osceola Foundation. Over the next two years, you’ll see stories and photos from Nantucketers Robert Graves (at the high school), UMaine student Dylan Marks, and Harvard student Anna Popnikolova.
A year goes by too fast, so we’re going to publish another magazine midway through. We are partnering with Remain to publish Bluedot Kitchen: Nantucket Food, in which we will feature the makers, cooks, farmers and producers who keep us nourished. It will be out by July 4.
Until then, thank you for reading.
Jamie Kageleiry (and Britt Bowker)
