When I worked at the Martha’s Vineyard Times six years ago, we collected “perfect Vineyard Days.”

Back then, my idea of a perfect way to spend a Vineyard day looked something like this: morning yoga at the Yoga Barn; breakfast at the Art Cliff Diner; and a long stretch at Lambert’s Cove Beach, where the clear waters, soft white sand, and distant views of the Elizabeth Islands offer New England’s own slice of the Caribbean. Afterward, a sunset hike through Menemsha Hills, where panoramic views of the rocky coastline — and again, the Elizabeth Islands — meet a sky brushed in soft pinks and purples. Then, a long outdoor shower, dinner at State Road, and live music at the Ritz to close out the night.

Now, as another Vineyard summer begins, I find myself thinking about what my perfect day might look like today — especially as someone who no longer calls the Island home. With intentions tuned more closely to sustainability, and a growing sense of how special this place really is, I find that my idea of a perfect day has shifted.

It might still start with a yoga class or a morning swim, but it would also include small choices that honor the Island’s natural beauty — biking or walking (or hopping on a free VTA bus through Sept. 30), picking up litter I find along a trail, supporting local farmers and artisans, or taking a moment to learn about the efforts being made to protect our fragile shorelines and marine life. It might even mean doing a little less, simply being more present — and definitely taking a shorter shower.

In this issue, we invite you to think about your perfect Vineyard day, too — and how it might be shaped by the idea of treading lightly, giving back, and savoring this place in ways that help preserve it. From conservation efforts to businesses embracing green practices, we’re celebrating the many ways Islanders are working to keep the Vineyard vibrant, beautiful, and resilient. We hope the stories and resources in these pages inspire you, whether you’re here for a season, a lifetime, or just passing through.

    See you out there,
