From flying coach to plant-based catering!

The main message I live by is that things don’t always have to be done the way they’ve always been done.

Billie Eilish, singer, songwriter, environmentalist

Dear Reader,

Billie Eilish is no typical superstar. For one thing, despite worldwide sell-out tours, she doesn’t travel by private jet, lamenting that she has to travel by plane at all. “I hate it,” she told a reporter for Vogue magazine. For another, she decided early on in her career that she was going to use her massive platform to share and encourage others to adopt her eco-friendly habits, including a plant-based diet. She credits growing up in a family that has long championed sustainability. (Read Bluedot founder Victoria Riskin’s conversation with Eilish’s mom, Maggie Baird, about her non-profit providing vegan meals to those living on the streets.)

Touring takes its toll on the planet, but Eilish used her 2024/25 tour to raise $13.3 million for climate organizations, deliver 7.7 million plant-based meals (which reduced food-related emissions by half), and eliminate 135,000 single-use bottles. Maybe modeling how we can each do things differently is exactly what Eilish was made for.

Admiringly,

Dot

Climate Quick Tips: Arrest Those Pests Alliums, such as onions, chives, and shallots act as natural pest repellents in your garden. They give off an odor that masks the scent of more appealing plants that insects like to feast on, so plant them nearby. But note, too, that signs of insect life in your garden are typically healthy. Bluedot’s gardening columnist offers lots more tips on eco-friendly plantings.
