Dot often notes just how thrilled I am to receive notes from you. And recently, an email came from Kathleen Keefer, who wrote, “My husband and I recently moved to a downtown apartment [and] I miss my herb, vegetable, and flower gardens a lot!!” Kathleen said that although her new apartment came with a garbage disposal, she is delighted she doesn’t have to use it because she has found a wonderful solution. Her church, she says, signed a contract with a local environmentally friendly garbage collection company that picks up garbage for landfill, items for recycling, and waste that can be composted. The church uses the compost option for much of its community garden waste in the warm months, but people can also use the containers for compost if they “buy in,” Kathleen tells us. And — this might be the best part — the company even visits the city’s zoo and picks up “zoo poo” for compost.
Because the company’s compost facilities are industrial, they can compost much more than a typical homeowner. Kathleen lives in Omaha, Nebraska, and notes that the company — Hillside Solutions — is expanding into other parts of the city. (Incidentally, the website notes that Hillside is a small, family-owned business, so customers’ money stays local.)

Such a lovely thing to come across on the internet. Thank you to your reader and to Bluedot for helping us spread the good word on the composting services we’re offering in Omaha, Nebraska. Sounds like your reader is using Drop-off Compost Club, which is where “clubbers” as we call them, have access to 60+ drop-off sites. We also launched Curbside Compost Club this year, which, as you can imagine, provides homes with their own cart that we pick up. Things are going swimmingly. Thank you for this wonderful community!
