And how to create an outdoor space like this on your own.

This yard is a perfect blend of coastal breezy and water-wise, creating an iconic SoCal vibe. The hardscape naturally blends in with a mix of succulents, grasses, and perennials that attract pollinators to the garden.

The rosemary shrubs awaken your senses, bringing fragrance to the space, while its dainty blue flowers buzz with bees. As a bonus, they provide a culinary treat year-round. Tucked among the shrubs and succulents is sea lavender, a perennial with purple, white, or pink flowers that thrive in coastal settings. This plant flowers nearly year-round, making it a pollinatorโ€™s dream.

The combination of grasses and succulents keeps the yard low maintenance and water-wise. Succulents like the agave come in different colors and sizes, adding interest and depth to the space. The low-growing blue chalksticks (Senecio serpens) and flowering aloe at the sidewalk edge provide a beautiful pop of color to welcome people to the home.

Want to create a look like this at your home? Here are some tips:

    • Make sure to research your gardening zone and pick the right plants for your area to maximize their success. California is a unique region with multiple climates and microclimates that can change from one neighborhood to the next.
    • At a neighborhood nursery or garden center, you can easily find dedicated spaces and staff knowledgeable about grasses, succulents, cactuses, and drought-tolerant plants.ย
    • Pick colors for both your hardscape materials and plants that play off and highlight each other, or choose a simple, monotone look with your plants and let the different textures bring interest.
    • Research your plants when designing, and find natives when possible. Plant California sea lavender (also known as Western marsh rosemary) instead of European sea lavender, coastal agave (Agave shawii), or a native ornamental grass.ย
