Changing diapers … into biochar. Plus, a tip to clean your cashmere.
Dear Reader,
When I had three young Dots and I spent a lot of time changing diapers, I never dreamed of changing them into biochar. But that’s exactly what Carrie Pollack is doing — first by providing compostable diapers to clients of her Diaper Stork company in Puget Sound, and then by using a high heat process to turn those diapers into nutrient rich biochar. (What is biochar? Think charcoal, only smarter. It’s a carbon-sequestering superhero.)
Our Climate Champ, who offers a cloth diaper service as well, is currently working to make her business even more environmentally conscious, trying to source an end use for the biochar (there’s promising research on using it to replace conventional fertilizer).
