And how to build a better soup.
Dear Reader,
It’s Feel-Good Friday, though perhaps this week it’s more of a “Feel-Kinda-Conflicted” Friday, because today we’ll start in the ashes of the Iran War. If there’s a silver lining (at the cost of lives), it’s this: Governments around the world are getting a painful lesson in the deeper cost of relying on oil and gas for power, and many are responding by accelerating the buildout of clean energy and spurring policies that focus on both energy-efficiency and electrification. Britain, for instance, just announced that all new homes must be built with solar panels and heat pumps. CleanTechnica calls the war “the beginning of the end of fossil fuels.”

Referring to the oil-rich state of Texas, Atmos reports that “Oil Country is Betting on Geothermal.” And Inside Climate News spoke with Brock Yordy, a third-generation driller, about how he’s hoping to lure other drillers into geothermal. (Bluedot Living featured Brock in The Shift, our series on transitioning out of fossil fuel jobs and into climate-friendly careers.)
And with the war spurring more people to seek alternatives to conventional cars that rely on gasoline, we’re likely to see an even greater surge in cycling, which is already experiencing a boom in some of the world’s most iconic cities, including Paris, London, and even Beijing. Even in America, where the car is king, people are surprisingly receptive to ditching it for a bike.
Positively,
Dot
