This week’s Climate Champ. Plus, a tip to find community in service.

    Dear Reader,

Anxious about climate’s impacts? Furious at corporations’ worship of profits over people? You need Oilwell, an app designed to help reduce our climate anxiety “as the world burns.” Oilwell is, of course, a spoof (Happy April Fool’s Day, Readers!), but its aim is deadly serious: According to Serious People, the U.K. organization that created the app, “Oilwell is a tool created to challenge PR agencies that pump out PR for the oil and gas industry while pretending to care about health and sustainability.”

How will using this meditation app help us? Its creators assure us that we’ll develop resilience to the truth, adapt to anxiety, and learn to manage expectations. As “Shanon from New York” says in her review, “The recurring nightmares about flooded coastlines haven't stopped, but now when I have them, I can center myself with Oilwell's 6-Hour Smokestack ASMR Experience. I'm still terrified, but peacefully so.”

The app includes guided meditations, a mood tracker, and a sleep mixer, all designed, it promises, to help concerned citizens transform overwhelming climate dread into a manageable background hum.

In reality, Serious People hopes that the app will get people talking, and, just maybe, remind PR companies that their promotion of fossil fuel companies is playing dirty.

    Satirically,

    Dot
