Take action: volunteer your time!
We don’t have to feel empowered to act. We have to act to feel empowered.
– Anya Kamentz
Dear Reader,
We can all be forgiven for occasionally falling into despair. There is a lot going on in the world, much of it heartbreaking: cruelty to our fellow humans, disregard for nature, dehumanizing technology that creates more barriers than connections.
That’s not the whole story, of course. But it’s what tends to make the headlines. It’s easy to feel powerless in the face of all this, which is the opposite of what we need right now.
As Anya Kamentz, who writes the incredible The Golden Hour newsletter, tells us: “My friend Elizabeth Svoboda just wrote about a study that showed that taking a small action, in line with your values, improves well-being and reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety. Simply reflecting on your values, without taking action, did not work. The researchers suspect this is because action amplifies a sense of agency — the other way around.”
Or, as Bluedot contributor and Imagine If podcast host Cleo Carney puts it, “eco action is the best antidote to eco despair.”
Actively,
Dot
