Dot’s quote of the week.
“Real generosity toward the future lies in giving all to the present.”
– Albert Camus
Dear Reader,
Albert Camus wrote those words in November of 1946, in the wake of the Second World War. He was articulating the importance, as the world struggled to make sense of what had happened, of clear-sightedness. The problem, he wrote in “Toward Sociability,” “is not how to carry men away; it is essential, on the contrary, that they not be carried away but rather that they be made to understand clearly what they are doing.” Camus was speaking, largely, about a world of war and violence, not of a changing climate. Yet twenty years ago, Dot listened to a young Indigenous activist refer to climate change as “an act of violence toward future generations.”
2024 was declared the hottest year on record, with the previous 10 marking the hottest decade. This heat has, of course, resulted from our choices. What we choose in our present informs our future.
Camus says, “I have always held that, if he who bases his hopes on human nature is a fool, he who gives up in the face of circumstances is a coward.”
Bravely,
Dot
