Today Dot is delving into the topic of hair stylists as climate advocates. Dot has relied on Amy for more than two decades to keep her tresses healthy and trimmed. And during that time we have talked about children, aging parents, travel, Auschwitz (Amy’s husband is Polish), and, of course, given Dot’s interests, climate change impacts and solutions.
And it turns out we’re not the only ones discussing climate in the stylist’s chair. Dot already shared the story of an Australian hairdresser who had the brilliant idea of inviting climate scientists to teach classes to fellow stylists on how to talk about climate change. But now, Katherine Hayhoe tells us, that program is spreading with four towns in Ireland preparing to roll it out. Hayhoe points to the research making clear that hairdressers are uniquely positioned to share this message, thanks to the trust they build with clients over years of often intimate conversation. A U.K. study called “Mirror Talkers” revealed that 74% of those getting haircuts left with plans to implement more eco-friendly actions into their lives.
But talk isn’t the only way hairdressers are weaving climate solutions into their practices. Green Circle Salons have found ways to reduce their waste by up to 95%, including hair clippings, excess product, and much more.
Next time you visit your hairdresser, don’t wait for them to broach the topic of climate. Bring it up yourself, and encourage your stylist to share information with their other clients.
