    Dear Reader,

None of us wants to imagine our homes being damaged or wiped out by disaster. But, according to Earth 911, “The flood risk landscape has dramatically worsened since 2020. Hurricane Helene, which sent floods tearing through the Southeast, headlined 27 disasters in the United States in 2024 that individually cost $1 billion or more. It was the second-highest number since the NOAA record began in 1980. Meanwhile, 2023 saw 28 weather and climate disasters, surpassing the previous record of 22 in 2020, reaching a price tag of at least $92.9 billion.” Knowing your home’s level of risk could save you hassle, money, and, potentially, your life. However, our rapidly changing weather patterns are making flood risks harder to project.

The New York-based nonprofit First Street Foundation was launched in 2020 following the finding that 67% more American homes than previously estimated face high flood risk during the next 30 years. And updates to their data conclude that the risk has further intensified. But forewarned is forearmed, which is why Yale Climate Connections is recommending 30 great tools to help all of us calculate our home’s flood risk

Dot hopes we all remain safe and flood-free. But with our risk increasing all the time, let’s be smart … and get prepared.

Climate Quick Tip: Be Water Wise When Washing Dishes Handwashing dishes is not as energy efficient as a dishwasher. But if handwashing is your only option, here are tips to boost your efficiency: Use hot water and soap in one sink and only fill up as much as you need. Rinse using cool/cold water in a separate sink or tub DON’T run the water while washing, which uses 2 to 5 gallons of water per minute. (Dishwashers use 6 gallons on average for the entire cycle.) If a dishwasher is available, it’s the eco-friendly choice.
