Bears are bulking up for the season. Doing the same on your next shopping trip can save you money and reduce plastic.

    Dear Reader,

Each year, Fat Bear Week brings us all together to vote for and cheer on the biggest, the baddest, the bulgiest of the bears. What is Fat Bear Week? Well, some of the largest brown bears on Earth make their home at Brooks River in Katmai National Park, Alaska. In order to survive a harsh winter hibernation, brown bears must bulk up — and Fat Bear Week is an annual tournament in which we all get to celebrate their heft. Voting ends September 30, so meet the bears, fill out your bracket, predict your fat bear winner, and campaign for your candidate. There’s still time … though bearly, er, barely.

For those of us similarly preparing for hibernation and wanting to bulk up in solidarity with our ursine champs, Bluedot offers some deliciously sustainable recipes, including Cambodian doughnuts, bulgur meatballs, and, any bear’s favorite, pan-seared salmon

    Bearably,

    Dot

Climate Quick Tip: Bulk Up To Save Money: Just 9 percent of plastic is actually recycled, according the EPA. And plastic wrap is one of the least likely products to be recycled! Instead, buy in bulk and don’t pay for the packaging, taking your own reusable containers when possible. Store leftovers in repurposed glass containers, reusable or compostable bags, or bees wrap. Plastic shrink wrap is rarely recyclable or recycled. Try one of Bluedot’s Buy Better cco-friendly storage options instead.

Plastic shrink wrap is rarely recyclable or recycled. Visit a local refill store and buy in bulk, filling your own reusable storage containers.
