This week’s Climate Champ, plus a tip to avoid food waste and green your greens.

Dear Reader,

Dot first “met” today’s Climate Champ, Sarah Lazarovic, via her newsletter More Vibrant Planet, which promises “unscary” news about fighting the climate crisis, along with cookies, and dancing.

But Dot then actually met Sarah via a Zoom call in which Sarah evangelized about heat pumps. I have rarely met anyone so excited about … heat pumps. But her enthusiasm is authentic. And contagious. Not sold on them yourself? Why the heck not?

As Sarah explains, “I talk about heat pumps all the time because I’m a big believer in one-and-done-ish, high-leverage climate actions. That is to say, the larger decisions we make that really impact our emissions.” We all need to heat (and, as the planet warms, cool) our homes. So we need to use something. And why wouldn’t we use a something that can bring our household emissions down by 70–80% while also being really good at heating and cooling our homes? Heat pumps are so effective that Sarah calls them “magic.” They make her want to dance.

Read Sarah’s extremely compelling, extremely amusing sales pitch. And then tell your neighbor why you’re getting a heat pump.

Championingly,

Dot

Climate Quick Tip: Green your Greens and Avoid Food Waste: Fruits and vegetables make up a good deal of North America’s food waste — the UN reports one billion tons of food are thrown out annually. Cut up fruit and veggies for ease when you’re not inclined to cook, or chop and freeze them for smoothies or to add to ice cream. Avoid food waste by using the entirety of ingredients, storing food properly, ignoring expiration dates (use your senses!), and shopping your fridge.
