Your dishwasher saves water.
Dear Reader,
Any new parent knows the endless days and nights of diaper changes and the subsequent mountain of waste. But today’s Climate Champ is tackling that accumulation on two fronts. Jennifer Pollack, a Seattle-based mom, has been Dot’s Climate Champ before — celebrated for her company Diaper Stork, which provided a cloth diaper service to local parents. But recognizing that a significant percentage of folks are stuck on disposables, she went ahead and purchased Boo, a bamboo-based disposable. This version is compostable — though best done in a municipal facility. Pollack took the process a step further, turning the used bamboo diapers into biochar, which, as we learned in this Bluedot story by Britt Bowker, “can be used in gardens or on farms to improve soil health, store nutrients and water, increase plant growth, and sequester carbon. Biochar can also treat water. It’s a way to turn local organic waste into a powerful climate solution.”
To date, our diaper champ has diverted more than 3 million diapers from landfill. Read her whole story here.
Swaddlingly,
Dot
