Here we are with another collection of Feel-Good stories to remind all of us just how many cool things are happening around the world.
Let’s start with the news that, though we now know that solar panels actually attract bird species (not to mention provide affordable, clean energy!), it turns out that agriculture-turned-solar farms in the UK are attracting even rare species of birds. Why the appeal? Solar farms offer undisturbed land, flourishing local wildflowers, and plenty of insects, which create “islands of safety,” according to a study from Cambridge University and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. There’s even hope that widespread solar farms could double the world’s bird conservation efforts.
Speaking of harnessing the sun, scientists in Germany have built the world’s most efficient solar panel.
In Mexico, 350 captive dolphins have found freedom.
By banning a popular painkiller for livestock and building breeding centers, India, Nepal and Pakistan have brought a species of vulture back from the brink of extinction.
And California is ensuring that its low-income residents can access free home electrification. Revenue from the state’s carbon-market will subsidize the costs of replacing fossil-fuel appliances with heat pumps and induction stoves, and making other efficiency upgrades.
