The San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy works to acquire land within the 92,000-acre planning area of the San Dieguito River Park, which runs from the ocean at Del Mar to the pine forest near Julian.

Conservation begins with appreciation, so get out there and enjoy the park. Choose a hike or a bike ride that’s easy or strenuous or anywhere in between.

“The river valley is for everybody and the Conservancy makes it accessible for everybody,” says board President Lee Haydu.

Conservation, education and recreation are the three pillars that support our mission and draw strength from our members, volunteers, and everyday park users.

Conservation

Conservation can mean getting your hands dirty. At least once a month, we schedule work parties to plant native plants and remove non-native species. We can organize a work party for your office — it’s great bonding to dig into the dirt with colleagues. Hard work has never been so much fun!

Education

Our education program embraces natural history that covers multiple ecosystems as well as cultural history that dates to the pre-Columbian Kumeyaay Indians. We get kids excited about nature with hands-on programs and engage adults with programming that marries the outdoors with science, art, exercise and being social

Recreation

The Conservancy protects nature for wildlife and makes it accessible for people. Our recreation program includes the Coast to Crest Trail Challenge, an annual hiking series that rewards participants with a collectible patch and by publishing their selfies. Now in its eighth year, the Challenge refreshes every July with a new series of five hikes. In addition, Walk N Talk group hikes bring experts to the trail to discuss natural and cultural history with participants. Three times a month, we host a free Yoga at the Birdwing class — you won’t find a better place to bend and stretch than the scrubby slopes near the San Dieguito Lagoon.
