A quick Q&A spotlighting island changemakers sharing what inspires them and what’s on their plate. Stay tuned for more in the upcoming weeks.
From the Linda Loring Nature Foundation staff
Bluedot Living: What’s your favorite trail on the island?
LLNF: Our favorite trail would have to be the ones at Linda Loring Nature Foundation at 110 Eel Point Rd. Our main, one-mile loop trail gives you all the best Nantucket views — beach, pond and untouched conservation land! This trail also connects to our two other trails: our Children's Story Walk trail, which has just recently been upgraded; and our easement trail that connects Eel Point Road to Fisher's Landing. If you're looking for a longer walk, that is a great one!
BL: What’s your favorite view?
LLNF: Along our main loop trail, there are a number of benches that provide a moment to stop and take in the nature around you! One of the benches along this trail faces the dunes and ocean views of the North Shore, with Long Pond and an expanse of native sandplain grassland just behind you.
BL: What’s the most delicious locally sourced bite you’ve had in the past month?
LLNF: We love that Oran Mor incorporates local producers in many of their menu items, as well as the Nantucket Culinary Center in their cooking classes!
BL: What’s a recent or upcoming project, program, or event you’re excited about?
LLNF: We are very excited about our most recent restoration project here at LLNF! Led by Dr. Sarah Bois, this resilient restoration project is five years in the making at the North Head of Long Pond, working to revert the site from developed landscape with non-native invasive species to a more resilient, native, biodiverse ecosystem. This project was planned alongside Wilkinson Ecological Design with resilience to climate change impacts in mind.
The goals of the project were to restore the native sandplain grassland habitat on the upload portion of the site, and plant salt-tolerant species on the pond edge to combat predicted sea level rise. We welcomed over 40-plus volunteers from the community to help plant native plugs at the site, including Nantucket New School. It was so much fun and a huge success!
