And how to get out red wine stains!

Dear Reader,

Does Dot have some fun Feel-Good Friday content for you today!

First up is an Ugly Duckling twist with a squat Canada gosling that’s been adopted by a pair of long-legged sandhill cranes in Madison, Wisconsin. “The first time I saw the family, I did a double take,” writes Anne Readel in Smithsonian magazine. It’s an odd pairing, but one that scientists expect will become more common, as both Canada geese and sandhill crane populations have rebounded, putting both species in greater contact with each as they share an overlapping taste for urban-rural habitats. This story might not have a happy ever after, warn experts, as the species have dissimilar diets, behave differently on land and in water (the gosling is reportedly swimming circles around its parents and siblings), and follow different migration patterns. But thus far, reports are that the parents and offspring gaze at each other “lovingly.”

Bees are essential to our ecosystems, and threats to their survival are threats to our own. And now, according to Science Daily, “Scientists have developed a breakthrough food supplement that could help save honeybees from devastating declines.” Researchers have engineered a yeast to produce six essential sterols found in pollen. It provides bees with a nutritionally complete diet and boosts reproduction up to 15-fold. It’s a huge breakthrough for beleaguered bees dealing with the threats of climate change.

Sweetly,

Dot
