A well-made utility knife tops the list of must-haves for any home renovator. We recommend the Dewalt Folding Retractable Utility Knife. Bea Copeland kept this little helper in her coverall pocket during her two-year-renovation (learn all about it in The Cabbage Dispatch), and it never ceased being useful. It tackles basic jobs, like opening packages, big jobs, like cutting drywall and slicing old carpet and astroturf, and fiddly jobs, like removing paint-coated screws. A small storage component holds two extra blades and the blade can extend to four different lengths. Dewalt’s parent company, Stanley Black & Decker, has announced a goal of achieving carbon neutrality and zero waste to landfill by 2030, as well as achieving 50-50 gender parity in corporate leadership. By 2025, all packaging will be reusable, recyclable, or compostable. Dewalt and SDB also partner with TerraCycle to offer free recycling services for products at end-of-life.
