A community responds after a homeowners’ association board voted to cut down a critically endangered tree to stop it from happening again
The Torrey pines in our homeowners' association are more than just trees. They were planted as saplings when our homes were built in the mid-1970s and have since grown into scenic backdrops for gatherings with loved ones and a haven for numerous birds. Today they stand as living testaments to our shared history and love for nature, integral to our community's identity.
Many neighbors cherish these iconic trees, and every loss is deeply felt. Unfortunately, not everyone on our HOA board feels the same. Some view the trees as problems rather than assets, while others worry about potential legal disputes stemming from their size. Not long ago, a healthy Torrey pine was removed after a bruising battle with the board. Months later, another hardy tree was headed toward the chopping block, and this news is what propelled our community into action.
Torrey Pine Tree: North America's Rarest Pine Species
The Torrey Pine (Pinus torreyana) stands as a living testament to California's unique botanical heritage. As the rarest pine species native to North America, these remarkable trees have captured the imagination of botanists, conservationists, and nature enthusiasts for generations. With populations limited to just two locations—a small stretch of San Diego coastline and Santa Rosa Island—the story of the Torrey Pine offers fascinating insights into plant conservation, genetic diversity, and the resilience of narrow endemic species.
Pinus Torreyana: A Botanical Treasure
First documented scientifically in the 1850s and named after American botanist John Torrey, Pinus torreyana is distinguished by its gray-green needles bundled in fascicles of five. The trees produce large, heavy cones that take two years to mature, containing nutritious pine nuts historically valued by indigenous peoples.
Genetic studies conducted by researchers at San Diego State University have revealed that despite its extremely limited range, the Torrey Pine maintains surprising genetic diversity within its wild population. This genetic structure provides crucial resilience against environmental stressors, though the species remains vulnerable to climate change, air pollution, and development pressures.
According to the California Native Plant Society, the Torrey Pine's restricted distribution makes it particularly vulnerable to extinction. Fossil records suggest that this species once had a much wider range, but climate changes following the last ice age reduced it to its current limited distribution.
Torrey Pines State Reserve: Protecting a Natural Legacy
The mainland population of the Torrey Pine is primarily protected within Torrey Pines State Reserve, established in 1899 and located between La Jolla and Del Mar in San Diego County. This reserve safeguards approximately 3,000 trees in their natural setting among coastal sage scrub plant communities.
The reserve is home to some of the oldest Torrey Pines, with mature specimens estimated to be 300-400 years old. These ancient trees have adapted to thrive in the region's sandy soils and rely on coastal fog for supplemental moisture during the dry season—an ecological relationship that makes them particularly sensitive to climate change.
Visitors to the reserve can observe the distinctive silhouette of these trees, which often develop an asymmetrical, wind-sculpted form due to constant exposure to ocean breezes. The dark brown, deeply furrowed bark and sprawling branches create a distinctive appearance unlike other conifers in California.
Santa Rosa Island: The Channel Islands Population
The second native population of Torrey Pine trees exists on Santa Rosa Island in the Channel Islands National Park near Santa Barbara. This island population, classified as Pinus torreyana insularis, represents an intriguing botanical mystery—how did these trees establish themselves on an island 175 miles from the mainland population?
Some researchers suggest that scrub jays may have transported Torrey Pine seeds to the island, as these birds are known to cache pine nuts and play important roles in forest regeneration. Others propose that the island population may be a relict from when lower sea levels connected today's islands to the mainland.
The Channel Islands population occurs in one canyon on the northeastern shore of Santa Rosa Island and contains approximately 1,000 trees. This isolated stand provides scientists with valuable opportunities to study genetic variation between the two populations and better understand the species' evolutionary history.
According to research published in the Canadian Journal of Forest Research, the island population shows slightly different adaptations than the mainland trees, likely due to its unique growing conditions and long isolation.
Del Mar: Living Among the Rare Trees
The community of Del Mar, adjacent to the Torrey Pines State Reserve, has embraced its botanical heritage by protecting and planting additional Torrey Pines throughout the town. The Del Mar Pine has become a cultural and ecological symbol for residents, who have incorporated protection measures into local planning ordinances.
These community efforts complement the formal conservation work at the state reserve and demonstrate how endangered species preservation can be integrated into urban planning. Local regulations require permits for removing Torrey Pines and often mandate replacement planting when removal is unavoidable.
The town's commitment extends to educational programs that highlight the Torrey Pine's significance and vulnerability. Through these initiatives, Del Mar has created a model for community-based conservation of narrow endemic species.
Conservation Challenges and Research Efforts
The Rocky Mountain Research Station and its Fire Sciences Laboratory have studied the Torrey Pine's relationship with fire, concluding that while mature trees have some fire resistance due to their thick bark, intense wildfires can devastate populations. These cultivated trees demonstrate that the species can adapt to a broader range of conditions than present in its native habitat when provided adequate care.
These planted specimens contribute to conservation by maintaining genetic material outside native populations, serving as “insurance” against catastrophic events that might affect wild stands. However, botanists emphasize that planted trees cannot replace the ecological significance of natural populations with their integrated plant communities and evolutionary adaptations.
Gregory Scott, a researcher who has extensively studied the chloroplast genome of the Torrey Pine, notes that cultivated specimens often show less resilience to extreme weather events than those in native habitats—highlighting the complex ecological relationships that have evolved in natural settings over thousands of years.
Rarest Pine in the United States: A Conservation Priority
With fewer than 5,000 trees remaining in native populations, the Torrey Pine is indeed the rarest pine species in the United States. Conservation biologists monitor the health of existing stands carefully, with particular attention to signs of stress or decline that might indicate emerging threats.
Despite these challenges, the continued survival of the Torrey Pine in its coastal habitats offers hope for endangered species conservation. Each cone with its small-winged seeds represents the potential for renewal and continuation of this remarkable species into future generations.
Why fuss over a Torrey pine?
The answer lies in the tree’s vulnerability, beauty, and value, since a Torrey pine is no ordinary tree. In fact, these pines are the rarest in North America and among the rarest in the world. Their native habitat is a small, protected area in San Diego and a spot on Santa Rosa Island off the Santa Barbara coast. Because of their limited range, lack of genetic diversity, and dwindling populations, they are on the brink of extinction, hence their critically endangered status. Tragically, a grove of Torrey pines was destroyed by a wildfire in a nearby reserve while I penned this piece. A stark reminder of why every one of these trees matters.
Losing these trees would be a significant blow, as Torrey pines play a powerful role in protecting fragile coastal ecosystems. Wildlife relies on them for shelter, nesting sites, and sustenance. Native plants benefit from shade and water beneath their canopy. And their deep, wide roots help to stabilize sandy soil.
How to influence an HOA vote?
In anticipation of the upcoming board vote regarding the tree in question, our group crafted a petition to protect it. Mindful of the board's concerns for finances, we emphasized the economic advantages of mature trees, highlighting their ability to reduce energy costs, lower water bills, and increase property values. We addressed hot-button issues like rodent control, underscoring the role of perching predators such as red-tailed hawks in keeping rodent populations in check. Then, we appealed to their emotions by describing how our Torrey pines contribute to the well-being of our community.
Our petition received a record 60 homeowner signatures. Along with a heartfelt letter to the board president, we secured a spot on the agenda for the next board meeting. During the open session, neighbors shared personal stories about the tree's importance, which sparked a spirited discussion among the board. Then, surprisingly, the board reversed course, voting six-to-one in favor of preserving the tree.
While our triumph in saving the Torrey pine is a significant milestone, our fight is far from over. The board's attitudes largely remain unchanged, and future conflicts are likely. Nevertheless, this victory is a powerful reminder that advocacy matters now more than ever.
A neighbor recently shared a text that encapsulates the heart of our efforts: “I heard a Great Horned Owl last night hoot-hooting from the Torrey Pine tree near my unit. It was magical! Thanks again for all your efforts in helping to save the tree.” And that is something truly worth fighting for!

So Glas You saved the tree !
Perhaps a petition should be put together to make it illegal to cut down Torrey Pines without just cause, aka disease. If there is imminent threat to a structure then there is no reason that the tree shouldn’t be able to be moved, especially since threats are usually foreseeable. I can’t imagine how it is ok for a fricken HOA to have the future of a critically endangered species in its callous hands.
