    Description

The key to having these super-easy six-ingredient veggie burgers hold together on the grill is chilling the patties before cooking them. That extra time is completely worth it to have a delicious and nutritious plant-based patty that holds together and — even better — costs far less than any standard mock-meat burger patty.

    Ingredients

    Units Scale

    Instructions

    1. In a large bowl, mash beans until lightly crushed, with some larger pieces remaining. Add the oats, pizza sauce, garlic powder, bouillon powder, and oregano. Mix well to combine.
    2. Shape the bean mixture into six 1/2-inch thick patties and arrange on a lined tray or baking sheet. Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or up to 24 hours. Or you can freeze for 1 hour to set them more quickly.
    3. Once the patties are chilled, heat a greased grill or grill pan over medium heat. Cook the patties until golden-brown and heated through, turning once, about 10 to 12 minutes total. Add the burger buns to the grill in the last 2 minutes, if desired.
    4. Sandwich burger patties in buns with your favorite condiments and toppings.

    Notes

    • Making burgers ahead of time? Transfer the patties to an airtight container and freeze for up to 3 months for future barbecue nights! If using them from a frozen-solid state, increase the cooking time by 2 minutes per side, rotating the patties by a quarter turn on the grill halfway through cooking on each side, so they don’t burn.
    • A pizza-ier experience! Top the burgers with a slice of plant-based mozzarella and some plant-based pepperoni in the last minute of cooking and load them up with your favorite pizza toppings, like a pineapple ring, sliced tomato, and onions.
