CITYWIDE โ The New York City Department of Transportation released a report Wednesday, Jan. 15ย revealing significant trafficย fatality reductionsย in lower-income neighborhoods and communities of color since Vision Zero began in 2014. Neighborhoods where Black, Asian or Hispanic residents made up 80% of the population saw the sharpest declines, with pedestrian fatalities down by 32% and overall traffic fatalities by 26%.
The report highlights DOTโs focus on underserved areas, where redesign projects have transformed streets into safer spaces. Areas of Brooklyn with the most street improvements during 2024 included northern Bushwick, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Crown Heights, Canarsie and Bedford-Stuyvesant, according to the 2024 Vision Zero equity report.
NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez noted the importance ofย equitable investments: โThese projects save lives and build safer communities.โ
