Climate Quick Tip: Be Water Wise When Washing Dishes Handwashing dishes is not as energy efficient as a dishwasher. But if handwashing is your only option, here are tips to boost your efficiency: Use hot water and soap in one sink and only fill up as much as you need. Rinse using cool/cold water in a separate sink or tub DON’T run the water while washing, which uses 2 to 5 gallons of water per minute. (Dishwashers use 6 gallons on average for the entire cycle.) If a dishwasher is available, it’s the eco-friendly choice.

Call Your Reps — and Encourage Climate Action While individual actions matter, collective action (and legislated action) creates bigger, faster change. Tell your political representatives at all levels how important and necessary it is to enact policies that address climate change and make all our communities healthier and safer. Pro tip: If you’re a bit shy (us too!), call outside of office hours and leave messages. In the U.S., Common Cause provides contact info for political reps. In Canada, the On Canada Project provides contact info and even templates for letters.

Climate Quick Tip: Help Birds Avoid Window Collisions: Keep your feeders and birdbaths within one and one-half feet of window areas so that birds don’t hurt themselves upon liftoff. Birds won’t be able to create enough momentum to hurt themselves at this distance. Plus you can better see the birds at your feeders! (Or place them more than 30 feet away so that birds have plenty of space to clear the house.) Take steps to prevent birds from hitting your windows.
