The latest trend on TikTok? Thrifting. #ThriftTok has taken the social media platform by storm, with 1.3 billion views worth of videos, OneGreenPlanet reports. The fashion industry is responsible for 10 percent of total global greenhouse gas emissions. Buying second-hand is a way to keep clothes out of landfills and reduce carbon footprint by decreasing demand for, and consequently production of, new clothes. This latest social media trend shows that thrifting is popular among Gen Z, who, according to a recent study, are more likely to take sustainability into account when shopping than any other generation.

Similar hashtags like #ThriftFlip and #Thrift also have billions of views. The videos consist of everything from TikTokers showing off their latest thrift shop finds to offering tips on how to sift through piles of clothes or upcycle pieces. It looks like buying used clothes is in and fast fashion is out.
