Bluedot Living Kitchen’s editor reflects on childhood snow days.
I remember waking up to a room brighter than usual. I'd run to the window, and outside: a blanket of white, and a twinkle in the trees. A snow day!
I grew up in Massachusetts, so I spent a lot of time with the white stuff — shoveling, sledding, and snowballs. But one of the best memories is in the kitchen. My mother, who was a teacher lucky to spend snow days off with us kids, would make doughnuts.
She’d pull out the massive deep fryer. With staples from the pantry, it was easy to mix up the batter. We’d watch her drop rings and balls of it into the hot oil. The cake-y doughnuts are forever my favorite.
After they browned up and cooled, the doughnuts became an art project. With powdered sugar, a little milk, and food coloring, we’d concoct a rainbow of colored frosting. Then we’d sprinkle and sugar our way through, making each the most delectable treat.
In honor of snow days and the family projects that can build bonds and memories for a lifetime, we offer three ideas for when you find yourself stuck at home: a DIY Hot Cocoa Bar, Homemade Vegan Pizza, and Homemade Ricotta and Herb Gnocchi. Depending on how long the storm, you might be able to make all of them!
Happy snow-daying,
– Nicki Miller (Jamie Kageleiry and Emily Cain)
